The Eddie Report

I've held off a bit reporting on Eddie's progress in recovering from the fracture he incurred last October because, well, I've been afraid to jinx things. I know, I know. It's silly of me, but I just couldn't help myself. When something is touching-my-soul important I hold my mental breath until I'm very very sure I'm not wishful thinking or jumping to celebrate too soon.

So far, right this very minute, he's doing just GREAT! Walking down hill produces some awkward steps, but if I ask him to stop and take a minute to re-group, he can continue with a good open stride. Progress is being made!

He's been thrilled to get out, too -- and been remarkably well behaved. Sure, he's had a light dose of sedative, but just enough to take the crazy-happy dance edge off. He marches right along, alert and smiling.

I know we've only walked for a week now, and are a long ways away from saddling up, not to mention trotting or cantering, but this is progress. And it feels like that terrible gray cloud that's been following me around has lifted.

Thanks to each and every one of you for your good wishes, kind words, and heartfelt prayers. Eddie is on the home stretch!

  3. What a happy way to start my day, Susan. You and Eddie are quite a team. And you're both going on my gratitude list tonight -- you for your willingness to share your heart, and Eddie for -- well, just for being sweet, courageous Eddie

  4. Thank you, Fran! It's been a long haul, and there's still a ways to go, but through it all Eddie has been a star. It's easy to take care of someone who smiles when they see you. I'll remember that next time I'm sick (yeah, he's always teaching me something!)

  5. So glad he's out and about - such a huge step up from stall rest :) I had a horse tie up once, REALLY badly and for no reason we were ever able to pinpoint, and as part of his recovery, I had to get him up to handwalking for an hour to an hour-and-a-half before I could even consider getting on his back. THAT was entertaining! I hope Eddie continues to behave and improve :)

  6. Susanna, I had a horse tie up badly, too, years ago. It was awful. His recovery took over a year. However, he went on to live a very long life and was ridden all through his 20s. Honestly, I've never had a horse behave as well as Eddie has through this whole ordeal. It's so un-horse-like! My vet jokes about the practicality of standard recovery instructions by saying, "stall rest until dangerous." :) Eddie never got even close to that!

  7. My tied-up horse also fully recovered, continued three-day eventing for several years, and was then retired from active competition but used as a school horse for little girls all the way through his twenties. He died in October 2009 at the ripe old age of 37. He was awesome. There are pictures of him on my FB page :) (He's the extraordinarily handsome pinto :))

  10. Thanks, Susanna! I was able to pop over and Like your album...doesn't quite fit, though -- I LOVED it! Fabulous pictures! I'm still smiling. Jumping was my first love, and cross country was a passion. There's no feeling like it!

  11. Glad you liked it! Joker was an awesome little horse - just under 15.2, but with springs in his feet and a heart of gold :)

  13. Thanks, Margaret! He's very convinced of his own splendid-ness ;). If he were human, he'd be one of those people who makes friends wherever they go.

  14. Glad to see Eddie is feeling better! I've just recently stumbled upon your blog, but plan to follow you. As a horse trainer, it's nice to stay in touch with those with similar interests. We should surely stay in touch!

  16. Hi Susanna! Eddie is doing well. I've been meaning to do a post about his rehab, but I've been slammed these last few weeks trying to get my third book out. Good news on all fronts -- Eddie is being wonderful and cooperative, and the book will be out soon! I'll likely give a thorough run down of what's been going on with him by the end of the weekend. Thanks so much for asking!
